glibc의 관리자 Drepper씨도 wchar_t를 구현할 때에 UCS를 쓰지 않고 locale에 의존하는 X11식의 방법을 쓰려했다고 한다. 아무튼 glibc의 iconv는 UCS4를 wchar_t로 하였고 wchar_t는 locale dependent하지 않게 되었다.

X11에서는 wchar_t가 locale depedent하다고 한다.

FreeBSD는 아직 iconv()함수를 가지고 있지 않다. 그런데 그들은 wchar_t != UCS라고 생각하고 있으며, 일본의 영향을 많이 받은듯.
